School Library Journal (11/01/2007) Adult/High School-This guide to movies available for home viewing aims to suggest occasion-enhancers rather than to provide critical direction. The films are organized around life experiences, such as holidays, or when one is feeling lonely, preparing for spring break, or waxing nostalgic about grade school, and are described in terms of their relevance to the occasion and their acting, directing, and story line. Each section is arranged chronologically, and most include both domestic and foreign selections. A few titles are repeated in different sections, with annotations to suit the occasion under discussion. Teens and teachers will find this book a valuable resource both for entertainment advice and composing programming appropriate to seasons or events. Rightfully, highbrow and lowbrow fare share the pages here. The quality writing also provides nice concise modeling of expository prose.-Francisca Goldsmith, Halifax Public Libraries, Nova Scotia
Library Journal (08/15/2007) Do you ever wonder what movie to watch during a bout of insomnia or when feelings of "Apocalyptic Dread" and war worries take over? A film to celebrate Christmas might be obvious, but how about Passover? Film journalist Atkinson (Ghosts in the Machine: The Dark Heart of Pop Cinema ) and movie fan and database manager Shifrin offer recommendations in 104 different categories that include holidays, events, seasons, and more. There are obvious suggestions and blockbusters (Easter Parade with Fred Astaire and Judy Garland for Easter andSaving Private Ryan for Memorial Day) mixed with many surprises (the Holocaust documentaryShoah for insomnia) and little-known films (e.g., Peter Jackson's early movieMeet the Feebles recommended after a "Bad Day at Work"), each with a short review. Although the Internet is overflowing with movie recommendations and reviews, this may still be helpful as a reference tool and makes for entertaining browsing. Recommended for public libraries that need to fill in their movie-book collections.-Lani Smith, Boston
